Howe packs within the fans at NHL Fan Fair
Who's the main one player having the ability to match the greatest fan event throughout All-Star Weekend?
Gordie Howe is all about as large because it will get.
Mr. Hockey is at attendance Friday mid-day in the Scotiabank NHL Fan Fair in the Ottawa Convention Center to sign autographs along with buying and selling-card issuer Panini America. The main one-hour session came this type of crowd the lines needed to be closed before Howe might take his just right the podium.
The 83-year-old attracted fans of any age, including 18-year-old Kaira Galbraith, who posed for a few pictures with Howe delivering a playoff elbow right below Galbraith's face.
"It had been pretty awesome. It had been my very first time,Inch the Ottawa resident stated. "He stated he did not like my hat because I wasn't putting on it correctly."
Was Howe giving him the company since it would be a Pittsburgh Penguins hat? Or while he was putting on it slightly askew?
"I believe some both," he stated.
Kevin Lachance, 56, were built with a far clearer picture of the items it had been prefer to watch Howe dominate as part of the Detroit Red-colored Wings within the nineteen fifties and sixties. Lachance was raised keen on the Red-colored Wings and adopted them as his team before the Senators came back towards the NHL in 1992.
Time didn't do anything to break his passion of Howe or his understanding of methods intimidating the Hall of Famer might be.
"I am a large Gordie Howe fan," Lachance stated. "He's been my hero because the sixties. Becoming an adult, he was my guy. It had been my very first time meeting him. I am 56 years of age, and I am as nervous as hell. However it was nice to finally meet him."
Howe was the large attraction on the Friday that featured looks by rookie All-Stars Colin Greening from the Senators, Carl Hagelin from the Rangers, Raphael Diaz from the Canadiens and Ryan Johansen from the Blue Jackets. Daniel Alfredsson from the Sens and Marian Hossa from the Blackhawks held signings that belongs to them. Another-floor room, meanwhile, had interactive games and tests of hockey abilities for fans.
However it was Howe who the fans wanted to determine. Even Kevin's 7-year-old grand son Ethan -- who clearly never has seen Howe play -- were built with a pretty solid working understanding from the player.
"I've not really many userful stuff here about him yet," Ethan stated, before sounding just like a hockey encyclopedia. "Except the truth that he would be a real good player in the '50s and '60s. He obtained 50 goals and was an incredible shooter."
"And that he was tough," his grandfather chimed in.
"Yeah, no kidding," the grand son, who's more skillful about Howe than he recognized, responded. "Meeting him the very first time would be a great factor to complete. I am searching toward meeting him again."

Colts meet with Titans DC Perry for close to six hours
The Indianapolis Colts are wasting no time in their search for a new head coach, as the team interviewed Tennessee Titans defensive Jerry Gray for nearly six hours Friday regarding their vacant head-coaching job, according to league sources.
Sources also said the Colts want to speak to former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress in regard to their opening.
The Colts, who fired Jim Caldwell following a disastrous 2-14 regular season without star quarterback Peyton Manning, continue to add candidates from the league's pool of coordinators. Sources said New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer also on their list.

No. 12 Indiana beats Penn Condition 88-82
Jordan Hulls hit seven of No. 12 Indiana’s season-high 16 3-point area goals to assist the Hoosiers snap a 16-game Large Ten road losing streak and hang on to have an 88-82 victory over Penn Condition on Sunday.
Hulls, a 6-feet guard, scooted round the perimeter all game for open looks and handle with 28 points for Indiana (15-1, 3-1).
Lower eight points with 1:22 to visit, the Nittany Lions (9-8, 1-3) forced two straight turnovers to focus on a late go to get within 84-82 with 21 seconds left on two free throws by Matt Glover
But Matt Roth hit two foul shots and Penn Condition skipped a final-gasp 3.
Cheered on with a healthy sprinkling of fans putting on Indiana red-colored, the Hoosiers won a normal-season road conference game the very first time since a 67-61 win at Penn Condition on Jan. 21, 2010.
Penn Condition fans reserved a few of their greatest cheers for brand new football coach Bill O’Brien, who received a standing ovation after being introduced at center court throughout an initial-half timeout. Indianapolis prepares to host Big Ten title game, football
The idea seemed as dependable as an extra point in football.
The tradition-rich Big Ten Conference would have its inaugural football championship in Indianapolis, a town with a modern retractable roof stadium and lots of experience staging big events.
And when the Wisconsin-Michigan State game ends late Saturday night, it might go down as a success. But headlines this week have some observers wondering. Tickets were selling for as low as $14 on StubHub, well below face value. A post on Craigslist seeking paid "seat-fillers" for the game was exposed as a hoax, yet it received a lot of publicity and highlighted a real issue:
Is Indianapolis a college football town?
The Big Ten hopes so, because it has committed to having its championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium through 2015. But former Purdue football coach Joe Tiller, the school's all-time leader in victories, is among those who aren't sure enthusiasm for college basketball translates to college football.
"My attitude toward all of Indiana has never changed,'' Tiller said. "It's a basketball state. I think it always has been. … I think Indianapolis is a microcosm of the whole state.''
Tiller made it clear he wasn't indicting the city — "I love spending time in downtown Indy" — but merely stating what he sees as obvious. Indianapolis has received rave reviews while hosting six NCAA men's Final Fours in basketball. College football has a much lower profile.
This season, Indianapolis had the Indiana-Ball State game and the annual Circle City Classic, which has teams from historically black schools. Neither of those is in the same galaxy as the Big Ten title game. The last high-profile college football game in Indy was Purdue-Notre Dame in 1984 to open the Hoosier Dome.
The schools that identify with Indy as their city — IU, Purdue and Ball State — rarely make more than a blip on a national level in football. Purdue has had successful runs, but not a winning season since 2007. IU has been mired at or near the bottom of the league, finishing 1-11 this season. Thousands of seats were empty last Saturday for the state's biggest rivalry game, IU-Purdue, in Bloomington.
"Indy is a blah, corporate choice that needs the right combination of teams — see: Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State or Penn State— to deliver sellout crowds,'' wrote Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald.
McKewon suggested that a league "with the sand and leather-bound hubris to create division names of 'Legends' and 'Leaders'" would have done well to choose a cold-weather, outdoor site such as historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Indy beat out Chicago's Soldier Field for the game.
Local officials point out that the game is hardly being ignored. A total of 20,000 tickets made available to the general public July 30 sold out in two hours. Michigan State sold its allotment of 15,000 tickets. Wisconsin returned 1,900 of its allotment to the league office. Those tickets were put on sale to the public Wednesday.
John Dedman, spokesman for Indiana Sports Corp., which works to attract big events to the city, said the group is confident Saturday's game will be a sellout. The question, though, is how many seats will be filled. Dedman said he expects almost all of them to be filled.
As to how good a college football town this is, Dedman suggested waiting until after Saturday before making that judgment.
"I don't really know how to answer that,'' he said. "This is really the first event of its kind hosted here from the sports corporation's perspective. We do feel like there's a number of Big Ten fans in central Indiana. We have a lot of basketball fans, but we think lots of those are football fans, too.''

Lakers take control against Hornets
Kobe Bryant scored 30 points, Pau Gasol snapped out of his playoff funk with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers took control of their first-round playoff series with a 100-86 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night.
Andrew Bynum added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Lamar Odom had 13 points for the two-time defending champs, who took the lead for good when Ron Artest made a layup as he was fouled to make it 13-10.
The victory gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, with Game 4 in New Orleans on Sunday.
Chris Paul had 22 points and eight assist for the Hornets, who managed to stay within single digits for long stretches of the game but never truly threatened to take the lead.
Bryant's intensity was evident from the opening minutes when he violently rejected Carl Landry's attempted close-range shot out of bounds and soon after he cut into the lane for a vicious one-handed jam.
Hornets fans' attempts at booing or heckling him only seemed to help him focus. Hitting on his typical array of demoralizing 3s and off balance jumpers off the glass, he had 15 points in the first half. He didn't need to take the game over in the second because of Gasol's emergence, which the Lakers thought was long overdue after he averaged only eight points, about 11 below his average, during the first two games of the series.
Although Gasol still didn't seem quite himself in the first half, when he had four points, he became a factor when it mattered, hitting a momentum-changing 3 from the corner that made it 78-70 early in the fourth quarter. The basket ignited a 10-1 run during which Gasol scored seven points, adding a putback and a soft jumper from the baseline to give Los Angeles an 85-71 lead with 8:36 left, the Lakers' largest lead to that point.
Paul meanwhile, faded a bit in the second half, when he scored only four points.
The Lakers wound up cruising with a double-digit lead for much of the fourth quarter in the most convincing performance of the series by either team. If the Hornets are unable to bounce back in Game 4, the Lakers could close out the series at home in Game 5 on Tuesday night.
Certainly, the Hornets will need better production from their bench, which was a major factor in their surprising Game 1 triumph but accounted for only nine points on 4-of-17 shooting in Game 3.
Landry scored 23 points for New Orleans, while Trevor Ariza had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Emeka Okafor had 15 points.
Derek Fisher had 10 points for Los Angeles.
The Lakers' size advantage translated to a 48-42 edge in points in the paint and a 43-38 advantage in rebounding. That included 14 offensive rebounds that helped produce 17 second-chance points.
The Hornets kept the crowd in the game by outscoring the Lakers by a point in the third quarter, marking the first time in six quarter since their Game 1 win that they had done so.
Still, Los Angeles led 75-68 heading into the fourth quarter, and the Hornets would only get as close as 75-70 before Gasol's scoring spurt put the Lakers firmly in command.
Bynum helped the Lakers dictate the pace of the game early, tormenting New Orleans in the paint with four offensive rebounds and all 14 of his points by halftime. The Lakers took their largest lead of the first half when Bryant's 3, followed by Bynum's overpowering low-post move on Okafor, made it 43-32.
It might have been worse if not for Paul, who had 18 points in the first half, including seven late in the second quarter to trim New Orleans' deficit to 51-42 at halftime.

Jon Morris gets his due, call
A little before 1 o’clock Friday afternoon, Jon Morris’ phone rang. When he picked up, the voice on the other end belonged to Patriots [team stats] owner Robert Kraft.
On three previous occasions at this same time of year, the former Patriots great was hoping to hear from Kraft. But the call never came to his Blufton, S.C., home. After three failed attempts at having fans vote him into the Patriots Hall of Fame, Morris figured it just wasn’t meant to be.
But there was just something not quite right about having the best center in team history — and one symbolic of the oft-overlooked players who laid the foundation — not in its shrine. As it looked, Morris, who played during the AFL days in the late 1960s and early ’70s, realistically didn’t have the best chance of getting voted in by the fans when pitted against the modern players.
On Friday, over some fried clams at the Red Wing diner, the Patriots Hall of Fame’s newly formed senior selection committee needed little debate before voting Morris in, although there was a news embargo on the announcement until today.
“To get this phone call now, I’m just overwhelmed by it all,” Morris said, moments after speaking with Kraft. “It’s so exciting for me, and it comes when you least expect it, which makes it even better.”
Having lost out already to Sam “Bam” Cunningham, Jim Nance, and Ben Coates in the first three elections, and with Drew Bledsoe up for nomination for the first time this year, Morris thought he truly had no shot. And with a parade of more recent icons to follow (Troy Brown [stats], eligible in 2012, Tedy Bruschi [stats], Rodney Harrison [stats] and Willie McGinest in 2013, Ty Law in 2014), Morris didn’t believe his name would ever again be nominated down the road.
With legends like Morris in mind, the Patriots formed that new senior committee to consider early-era players for induction. The 10-member panel, which will meet every five years, will conduct its vote based on three candidates who had previously been selected as finalists and been retired at least 25 years.
Morris, a six-time AFL All-Star and Pro Bowl center, came away the winner this time. He will be inducted along with another 2011 entrant after the fans do their voting in a month-long balloting beginning April 15.
“(Morris) was never going to get in from the fan voting,” a committee member acknowledged to his fellow panelists on Friday. “No one is going to vote for a center who played 50 years ago.”
A separate nomination committee also met to select the three 2011 first-time nominees. Bledsoe is a sure bet to be on the ballot. Curtis Martin, Joe Andruzzi and Corey Dillon [stats] would be three other first-year eligible players.
Morris, who turns 69 next month, played 11 seasons with the Patriots. He had been advocating for a veterans committee like the one that was formed, so naturally he was pleased to hear that it had come to fruition.
“People like me had no chance, especially with the Super Bowl teams now starting to become eligible,” Morris said. “I told a couple of guys not to even nominate me, because it was tough to go through it again. But this was painless.”
The Patriots are the only team that allows fans the opportunity to vote on the members for its Hall of Fame.
“Anybody that’s played any kind of sport, whether it’s college or professional, wants to be the best that they can be,” Morris said. “This says you were. That’s just a confirmation, an underlying thing that says, ‘Yeah, I did accomplish something’ and it makes me feel great. I was fortunate enough to be selected to the athletic hall of fame at both my high school and my college. So now my pro team finishes that circle, and I’m as proud as I can be of it.”
According to Patriots media relations chief Stacey James, the committee was pleased with the process.
“We just wanted to make sure there was some mechanism in place to make sure those guys were not forgotten. This was the best way to protect against guys being lost in the process,” James said of the new committee. “We want to make sure we are recognizing and honoring the greatest players in franchise history and that no one gets overlooked in the process.”

Spurs' Duncan out indefinitely with sprained ankle
Duncan, a two-time league most valuable player and 13-times All-Star, had an MRI on Tuesday that the team said showed no signs of structural damage.
The 34-year-old forward will not travel with the Spurs on their three-game road trip that ends on Sunday in Memphis and will receive daily treatment.
"We will have a better idea of what the timeline is probably in the next 48 hours but he won't travel on the trip," Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford told reporters.
Duncan suffered the injury early in San Antonio's win over the Golden State Warriors on Monday when he landed awkwardly on his left foot and collapsed to the court. He left the game and did not return.
The Spurs have a NBA-best 57-13 record with the help of the post presence of Duncan who is averaging 13.3 points and nine rebounds per game.
Duncan, who has won four NBA title with San Antonio, has played in all but one of his team's games this season, and an extended absence could be a major blow with the playoffs approaching next month.

Lakers rally for 10th win in 11 games
By the time Kobe Bryant talked himself into a little confidence in his swollen ankle in the second half, Andrew Bynum and the Los Angeles Lakers' reserves had already taken care of Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic.
Pau Gasol scored 23 points, Bryant added 16 while playing on a sprained left ankle, and the Lakers roared away in the second half for their 10th win in 11 games, 97-84 Monday night.
Bynum had 10 points, a career high-tying 18 rebounds and four blocks while hounding Howard into nine turnovers - four more than the entire Lakers squad - in another eye-catching low-post game for the Lakers' young center.
It all added up to a rather easy night of work for Bryant, who decided to play despite seriously rolling his ankle during the third quarter of Saturday's win at Dallas.
''It was more mental,'' said Bryant, who went 7 for 19 and missed eight shots in the first half. ''It affected my bounce a little bit just because of the trust factor, just trusting it in the first half. Then at halftime, I just gave it a little pep talk.''
Bryant can afford to be cautious while his Lakers are on their most impressive streak of the season. Thanks to the Los Angeles reserves' decisive rally early in the fourth quarter, Bryant had to play just 30 minutes.
Lamar Odom scored 16 points as the two-time defending champions opened a seven-game homestand with another win over an elite team after an early season filled with flops against the NBA's best. The Lakers (48-20) also drew virtually even with the Dallas Mavericks (47-19) for second place in the Western Conference standings.
''We want to win every game on this home stretch here,'' Bynum said. ''(Howard) is a great player who's going to get his numbers, but we started scoring, too.''
Derek Fisher scored 15 points for the Lakers, who have the next three days off before lowly Minnesota visits on Friday. Los Angeles already had beaten San Antonio, Dallas, Atlanta (twice) and Oklahoma City since the break before this stirring second-half effort against the talented Magic, who appear entrenched in fourth place in the East.
Howard had 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Magic, who couldn't get rolling offensively in the second half of this 2009 NBA finals rematch. The Lakers all remembered last month's meeting in Orlando, when Howard dominated with 31 points and 13 rebounds while barely missing a shot.
''I just think they came out and played better in the second half, especially with their post defense,'' Howard said. ''They squared everybody in the paint and they forced me to make plays out to my teammates. They made it tough for me to score. We've just got to learn how to play through it.''
The Magic led throughout the first half, but the Lakers pushed ahead early in the third quarter. They didn't pull away until a lineup stacked with reserves made an 18-5 run spanning the final two quarters, running Orlando's starters off the court.
Los Angeles went ahead 85-69 on Odom's 3-pointer with 7:14 to play, and the Magic never got closer than 11 points after that.
''We had a good second half,'' Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. ''Got our offense running a little bit, got some steals and some easy baskets. (Bynum) did an adequate job on Howard, and he did a great job on the boards. ... I think Orlando faded a little bit. They were tired after that back-to-back.''
Ryan Anderson and Jameer Nelson scored 13 points apiece for the Magic. Coach Stan Van Gundy left his starters in the blowout until the final buzzer of Orlando's fourth stop on a five-game road trip ending in Milwaukee.
''We didn't play with as much energy in the second half,'' Van Gundy said. ''A good part of that is their defense. Give them credit, but we didn't move the ball the way that we should have. Bottom line is the game comes down to turnovers and rebounding.''
Bynum's improved play has been a major reason for Los Angeles' surge after the All-Star break. The 23-year-old with creaky knees still isn't in perfect health after missing the start of the season, but he soundly outplayed Howard early.
Bynum got more cheers than Bryant when both left the game in the final minutes.
''He's consistently performing this way, so we expect it from him,'' Bryant said. ''This is how he should play, and this is how he's going to play.''
NOTES: Van Gundy said the Magic miss the energy and presence of Matt Barnes, who signed with the Lakers last summer after one season with Orlando. The journeyman forward had five points and three rebounds in 17 minutes against the Magic in his fifth game back from a 26-game absence for surgery on cartilage in his right knee. ... Orlando G J.J.
